The device, which can mount to the top of your television, emits a continuous stream of infra-red light which maps the distance between the device and any object within its range. When motion occurs, like creating a gesture with your hands, the device senses the change in depth and extrapolates a motion based gesture.<br /><br /> Using a Microsoft Kinect scanner connected to my computer by way of the <em>Processing</em> creative coding environment and the <a href="http://www.shiffman.net/p5/kinect/">OpenKinect</a> library, I was able to screen capture a point cloud representation of 3D space.
